In recent decades, considerable evidence has emerged regarding the quality of treatment for hypertension in the outpatient setting, but this is not the case in the on-call setting. Patients with hypertension are frequently seen in emergency departments (EDs), and their management remains a source of uncertainty. It is important for the on-call physician to be aware that what they are
treating is a clinical picture, not a number, and that "less is often more," since treatment without clinical justification leads to iatrogenesis.
